The minimalist “Baby List”

What you really need to prepare for a baby.

Living a minimalistic lifestyle limited on space. It was important to me not to go over board with an excess of baby items. On a mission to only have what I absolutely need. Here is a list of items that got me through the first 6 months. Honestly, I wish I had this list when I was pregnant and lost in a world filled with so many decisions and stuff to choose from. I hope this list helps you simplify things, and please feel free to drop me a comment below!

In your humble abode

Breast pump ( Most insurances will pay for this)
Thermometer, Nose suction device
5-7 newborn onsies (long and short sleeve)
A couple sets of PJ’s
Socks ( I actually used socks as gloves – they stay on the hands better too!)
Baby wrap
Swaddle blanket
A couple of soft blankets to lay on the floor of flat surface
A folding diaper mat
Crib – we use a pack and play that converted from a bassinet to a crib.
Spare sheets for baby bed.
A couple of baby towels and some small hand ones.
Organic baby detergent
Organic formula – even if you are going to breastfeed. Have this for back up!
Baby shampoo
Baby brush
Nail file ( This worked way better than those dreadful clippers)
Baby books ( I started reading to him right away and he loves books!)
Pacifier, this a optional. Baby stopped using it on his own at 3 months…and it did help him get a good at sucking and latching on while we were learning to breastfeed!
A couple of soft baby hats. (also include a sun hat)
Warm clothing if your in a colder climate. If your in a warmer climate like I am, a couple of sweaters, and some comfy pants will do just fine.
Boppy pillow
Baby diapers and wipes, hypoallergenic laundry detergent.

What to include in your diaper bag

*Folding diaper mat
Diapers and wipes
A couple of chew toys (teether/favorite toy)
hand sanitizer
hat for baby ( sun or warm hat – depending on the climate your in)
1 backup outfit with socks
small baby blanket
*Baby food- formula, purified water in a glass container, 2 bottles, 2 nipples, and a small cooler tote with an ice pack ( if your breastfeeding you can take a frozen supply of breast-milk and leave in tote with ice pack to de-thaw).

*I felt there was no need to duplicate these items, I simply stored it in the baby bag. When I needed it I knew where to look for it :) …and baby and I were always ready to go!

Lastly, but most importantly!

I would like to mention Health Insurance. Primarily gap (secondary) insurance. Adding a secondary insurance that will cover what your main provider wont cover will save you lots of headaches down the road. This is so important to have! Here is a company we used TransAmerica, they covered everything our primary insurance didn’t cover, and it was so simple to submit everything online! The last thing you want is to worry about is paying some unexpected bills during such a beautiful time. Now, is the time to enjoy all the little moments….

I hope my lists help you simplify in a world where its so easy to over complicate things. Babies dont need much honestly, but one thing they do need an abundance of is LOVE.

father and son

Many good wishes on your path into parenthood…and may your baby journey be filled with lots love and happiness!

I love this list! We can get too crazy with babies buying every little gadget when in reality we need far less. Love your approach!

Great lists! It really helps new moms who are overwhelmed by the process. Kudos on socks as gloves. Way easier!

This is so true!! Everyone seems to want to sell us everything and to convince us that we NEED all of these things. But it’s really just the basics… and lots of cuddles! :)
