4 Days, 4 nights in the Atlantic….

yarrWe have been sailing now for 4 days about to approach our 4th night. We decide to head south after Easting the past 3 days and the weather and waves are kicking in high gear. Plus we are making 0 headway. The closest land is South Caicos. Not bad hey that would be a great stop.  The wind not on our side anymore, it would be wise to change to a much more favorable course. We change heading and make our way to land. We head south, South Caicos. Waves now on our port side, they are huge! We are riding them like a roller coaster. As the sun is setting we still dont see land. We are preparing to make our first anchoring in pure darkness.  We study the land by paper charts and hope for the best.

Its 10 pm. Wide awake, we are close to land. The tenseness in the air is becoming thick like the fog. All senses on high awareness, we proceed towards the channel. We can hear waves crashing against rocks and see a marker where the entrance is to South Caicos… between two big rocks. We communicate with a vessel that is coming in also and he stays back as he give us the go ahead to go in first. Just then I think, right now all our family is sleeping in their nice dry bed…and they have no idea that we are out here sailing away. Ok back to reality. My mind slipped away for a minute. We have to make our way through to the anchorage, no second chances. The surge is pushing us straight into the anchorage. So its as if we are surfing in. Slow adjustments, eye on the markers. All backups in place and the plan is clear. Fighting the feeling of exhaust, bones ache, spot light out, we make it through like professionals.  The wind is gusting about 25 – 30 kts the surge is making its way into the anchorage at full force. Lots of reefs to avoid but we should have nice sand to set our anchor in. We spot 2 other boats with no lights on! Make our way safely past them. The wind is so strong right now. Now we anchor. Then drag…. anchor again, its set. Wow.  We can relax now. Even though its windy and our boat is rocking and a rolling with the waves, this is our new neighborhood. We are safe and secure. We shower and watch a movie and eat some popcorn.  Just like normal people! Except our bed moves like we are still sailing…..
